Wanita MCA has been organising various small activities and programmes to get closer to voters in the Kuala Terengganu by-election and to explain issues to them.
Its chief Datin Paduka Chiew Mei Fun said the planned activities and programmes began immediately after the by-election campaign was launched on Jan 4, with several of its members mobilised to Kuala Terengganu to conduct the activities, besides campaigning for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
She said during the campaign period, Wanita MCA would also bring along teachers to teach and hold handicraft workshops while disseminating information on the government's development programmes and policies as as this was a more practical way to interact with the local community.
"We believe this approach is beneficial as it is also an opportunity for us to discuss and understand the problems faced by the local people.
"Although the activities may appear small and the attendance limited, to us it is easier to explain matters because of the face-to-face interaction with the target groups," Chiew said after a joint press conference with the Malaysian Women Tourist Guides Association at Wisma MCA, here, today.
She said the small group interaction would also be used to explain the changes brought about by the BN government and to instil confidence in the local participants that the BN government was a responsible government.
As for the Chinese voters who could be the deciding factor on the outcome of the by-election, Chiew said all this while Kuala Terengganu Umno and MCA had cooperated well and the government had given a lot of allocations and assistance to Chinese schools and to beautify Chinese villages.
"The allocations and assistance show that the BN government is fair to all races, considering that Terengganu BN has only one Chinese assemblyman, Toh Chin Yaw, for the Bandar state seat.
"And since it is in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency, we need a capable leader who can also work closely with MCA," Chiew said, referring to Wan Ahmad Farid.
Kuala Terengganu has 80,326 voters with Malays making up 87.4 per cent, Chinese 11.6 per cent and Indians 0.7 per cent.
The by-election will see Wan Ahmad Farid in a three-cornered fight with Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut from PAS and independent candidate Azharuddin Mamat @ Adam on Jan 17, following the death of the incumbent MP Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28 last year. source : bernama
